They might not be the oldest school in the country – or even the Western Cape, for that matter – but that is definitely not going to stop Paul Roos Gymnasium, the pride of Stellenbosch, from celebrating its 150th year of existence with more than just a splash of flair.

Even from day one, the founding fathers set the bar high for future generations of scholars when they created the school motto, Semper Splendidior. The English translation is “Forever more distinguished” and the rugby side of the celebrations alone is more than ready to measure up to that standard.

THE RUGBY DAY

The first date to diarise is the prestige Paul Roos 150 Rugby Day on Saturday 28 March 2015, at which all but one of the Western Province Premier A sides – Bishops has a prior arrangement – will be meeting opposition not often seen in these parts.

The programme is:

08:00 Hugenote vs Hermanus
09:15 SACS vs Langenhoven Gymnasium
10:30 Oakdale vs HLS Jacobsdal
11:45 Boland Landbou vs Worcester Gym
13:00 Paarl Gym vs Pietersburg
14:15 Rondebosch vs Outeniqua
15:30 Paarl Boys High vs Diamantveld
16:45 Paul Roos vs Affies

THE RUGBY TOUR

The second part of the celebrations will see the 1st XV hoping to go one better than local rivals Paarl Boys’ High – who finished runners-up in 2014 – represent South Africa at the SANIX tournament in Japan. The squad will leave for the Orient on 24 April and expect to return on 9 May 2015.

THE RUGBY FESTIVAL

The cherry on the top is the school’s being accorded the accolade of hosting the Coca-Cola Under 18 Craven Week from 13 to 18 July 2015.

It is understood that Natal graciously offered to relinquish their right to host the tournament in the light of the Young Maties’ special birthday.

So, who’ll be in charge of the flagship team in this year of celebration ?

THE RUGBY COACHES

Head coach : Hein Kriek

Assistant coaches : Stef Jordaan (forwards)
                                Lucas Roothman (backs)

Consultant : Dawie Snyman

Director of Coaching : Brendan Venter, who will also commute to Durban to assist Gary Gold with the Sharks.

Can’t imagine what they’re planning for their 200th birthday !
